Interdisciplinary Conference: Inclusion – Exclusion. Panel 4 – Science and Visual Art in Dialogue
Dias & Riedweg: Video Art and Favelas in Rio de Janeiro. Programme including five videos and artists' talk
Dias & Riedweg, Funk Staden, 2007
Trailer
The scientific conference is organised by Prof. Dr. Klaus Mathis, Faculty of Law, University of Lucerne. Its objective is to analyse and compare social phenomena and mechanisms of inclusion and strategies of exclusion, both theoretically and with the help of concrete case studies. Its five panels will bring together, besides law, other specialist areas such as philosophy, sociology, social anthropology, history and education. In addition to this, the conference will encourage a dialogue with visual art. What are the qualities and differentiating and common features of the two domains and what can they learn from each other?
In Panel 4, VIDEO WINDOW will present five video works about favelas by the well-known Brazilian-Swiss artist duo Dias & Riedweg from Rio de Janeiro. The central work is Funk Staden from 2007. This covers a fascinating spectrum from the early colonial period to the present day and offers insights into a marginalised urban environment and the musical subculture of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. It questions our patterns of perception of the alien and the other.
