VIDEO WINDOW as a Guest with works by Quynh Dong at Johann Jacobs Museum, Zurich
Accompanying exhibition, 4 February until 5 May 2019

VIDEO WINDOW presents three works by Quynh Dong at the Johann Jacobs Museum as part of American-Vietnamese artist Tiffany Chung's current exhibition entitled Thủ Thiêm. Chung's exhibition uses archaeological and cartographic methods to explore the old district of the same name in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and tells of everyday life today and of the presence of the French colonial power in Indochina.

Two of Quynh Dong's three works are videos: Sweet Noel (2013) and The Aquarium (2007). The third, The Second Stage of Beauty (2014), is a floor installation with ceramic objects representing wilted oversized tulip petals. The artist, who was born in 1982 in the North Vietnamese port city of Hai Phong, emigrated with her mother via Hong Kong to Switzerland, where she grew up near Berne from 1990. Today she lives in Zurich.

The accompanying event will be an artist and theme discussion by Bruno Z'Graggen with Qunyh Dong, Hin Van Tran (Bern University of the Arts) and Roger Buergel (JJM, director). The focus will be on questions concerning artistic strategies and representations, cultural identities, the situation of the Vietnamese diaspora and the history of colonial interconnections between Southeast Asia and the West.
